Head to head

inrelay vs Help Scout

Two calm-support philosophies — one priced per seat with metered AI, one flat with approval-gated AI on every reply.

The case for Help Scout

Choose Help Scout for calm, email-first support with the most mature docs tooling in the category — a polished, low-admin help desk teams genuinely like.

The case for inrelay

Choose inrelay for flat per-account pricing instead of per-seat, and an AI agent that drafts every reply in your voice with a human approving every send.

The inrelay vs Help Scout comparison is unusually close in spirit — both products bet on calm over control panels. The differences are structural: how the bill scales, and what the AI is allowed to do. Below is the matrix with gaps printed on both sides, each product’s honest wins, and the math at three and eight people. Sibling comparisons live at /compare.

02 · Their wins

Where Help Scout is stronger

Help Scout has earned its reputation, and this page won’t pretend otherwise:

  • Docs is the best knowledge-base product in this category. Years of refinement, multiple KB sites on paid tiers, and a huge base of teams whose self-serve support genuinely works. inrelay ships a knowledge base with custom domains, but Help Scout’s docs tooling is deeper and more mature today.
  • Brand trust and polish. Help Scout has been the “calm help desk” for over a decade. The product is consistently pleasant, the rough edges are long sanded off, and switching costs feel low because everything simply works.
  • Channels live today. Instagram DM and WhatsApp are shipping Help Scout channels, on the Free plan’s channel list no less. Ours are still in development.
  • Tiered SLA policies, shipped. Help Scout’s SLA tooling exists now; inrelay’s is in development. Reporting is closer — inrelay’s analytics ship on the Team plan — but Help Scout’s reports carry years more refinement.
03 · Our wins

Where inrelay is stronger

Same calm philosophy — different answers on price and AI.

  • Flat pricing that can’t whiplash. inrelay bills flat — $19 Solo, $79 Team, $149+ Studio — and teammates are never priced. Your sixth hire, and your sixteenth, cost nothing. Per-seat models make every hire a billing event.
  • AI on every reply, with a human gate. The agent triages, tags intent, and drafts every reply in your voice; approval before send is the default, and autonomous mode is a deliberate per-workspace opt-in. Help Scout’s autonomous AI Answers is confined to the chat widget, answers only from the KB, and bills $0.75 per resolution on top of your seats.
  • A real desktop app. Help Scout is browser-only; inrelay ships a dedicated Mac and Windows app, plus mobile, so support isn’t one tab among forty.
  • AI included in the plan price. Every plan includes the agent, governed by a monthly reply budget you set. No per-resolution fees. Ever.

Help Scout prices as of August 2026 (helpscout.com/pricing, annual billing). inrelay plans: Free, $19 Solo, $79 Team, $149+ Studio — details at /pricing.

On the history, plainly: between November 2024 and February 2026 Help Scout changed its pricing at least five times — including a move to per-contact billing that was later reversed — and some long-time customers saw steep jumps before the rollbacks. Help Scout ended up back at per-seat pricing, and the current numbers above are what you’d pay today. We note it not to gloat but because pricing stability is part of what you’re buying, whichever product you pick.

05 · Moving

Migrating from Help Scout

The honest warning first: there is no one-click full export from Help Scout.

Get your customer list

Account owners can request a customer name and email CSV from Help Scout — that part is easy.

Thread history needs the API or a service

Help Scout’s in-app report exports exclude conversation contents; the complete path is the Inbox API (paid plans) or a migration service such as Help Desk Migration, which supports Help Scout as a source.

Questions, answered.

Is inrelay cheaper than Help Scout?
Usually, once there are two or more of you. Three people on Help Scout Standard cost $75/mo; inrelay Team is $79 flat. At eight people the gap widens: $200–360/mo per-seat against $79 flat, AI included and teammates never priced. On the Free tiers it depends on your shape — Help Scout’s allows 5 users but caps at 100 contacts/mo; ours is the Solo plan for one person, free forever with a small AI reply budget.
Is inrelay’s knowledge base as good as Help Scout Docs?
Docs is more mature — that’s stated plainly in the comparison above. inrelay’s knowledge base ships today with custom-domain support and feeds the AI’s answers, but if world-class docs tooling is your deciding criterion, Help Scout earns that point.
Can inrelay’s AI send replies without a human?
Only if you explicitly turn that on, per workspace. The default on every plan is that the AI drafts and a human approves before anything sends. Help Scout splits differently: email drafts are human-reviewed, while its AI Answers agent responds autonomously on the chat widget at $0.75 per resolution.
What did Help Scout’s pricing changes actually involve?
A move from per-seat to per-contact pricing in late 2024, two increases in 2025, then two decreases and a return to per-seat by February 2026. If you’re evaluating either product, read the current terms rather than a cached review — the numbers on this page are dated August 2026 for exactly that reason.
