Head to head

inrelay vs Zendesk

The category heavyweight against a flat-priced small-team inbox — and an honest account of which team belongs with which.

The case for Zendesk

Choose Zendesk for process-heavy support at scale: SLAs, deep analytics, skills-based routing, voice, and a marketplace of over a thousand apps — run by someone who owns its configuration.

The case for inrelay

Choose inrelay for a small team that doesn’t want an admin: one flat price, AI drafting every reply, a human approving every send.

The inrelay vs Zendesk question usually answers itself by headcount and admin appetite. Zendesk is genuinely powerful when a support-ops person owns it; without one, the flexibility becomes homework. Below: the matrix with gaps on both sides — ours are real — where each product wins, and the add-on math at three and eight agents. More head-to-heads at /compare.

02 · Their wins

Where Zendesk is stronger

For the team it’s built for, Zendesk isn’t just stronger — it’s the correct answer:

  • Workflow depth nothing here matches. Skills-based routing, IVR, sandbox environments, custom roles, App Builder — if your support process has a process, Zendesk can model it.
  • SLAs and analytics, today. Group SLAs, business-hours policies, and Explore-based reporting on every plan. inrelay’s SLA rules are still in development — a team managed by response-time targets should treat that as disqualifying for us, for now — and while inrelay’s analytics ship on the Team plan, Explore’s depth is years ahead.
  • Channel breadth, including voice. A full contact center — telephony, SMS via Talk, social messaging — in one vendor. Our social and SMS channels are still in development.
  • The ecosystem. A marketplace of 1,000+ apps, a partner network, and enterprise compliance posture built over two decades. Even critics concede: powerful and reliable, if someone owns its configuration.

That last clause is the hinge of this whole comparison. Zendesk assumes an admin. If you have one, much of the page below matters less to you.

03 · Our wins

Where inrelay is stronger

Everything below is a consequence of one design goal: no admin required.

  • One flat price, one meter you can predict. Team is $79 a month flat for the whole account — teammates are never priced, AI included with a reply budget you set. Zendesk bills on two axes at once (headcount × add-on stack) plus a per-resolution AI meter with rates it doesn’t publish. No per-resolution fees. Ever.
  • AI with an approval gate, not a resolution meter. Zendesk’s autonomous AI Agents resolve customer conversations with no per-message approval step — that is the billed unit. inrelay’s default is the opposite: the agent drafts, a human approves every send, and autonomy is a per-workspace opt-in.
  • Working in an hour, not a quarter. No trigger trees, no admin certification, no partner engagement. Connect the inbox, invite the team, approve the first drafts. Zendesk’s own community steers small teams toward simpler tools for exactly this reason.
  • Dedicated desktop and mobile apps. Zendesk is a web app with official mobile apps; inrelay ships a real Mac and Windows app as the primary surface, plus mobile. CSAT and a custom-domain knowledge base are in the box, not one tier up.

Zendesk prices as of August 2026, annual billing, from zendesk.com/pricing; per-resolution AI figures are third-party reported, as Zendesk does not publish overage rates. inrelay plans: Free, $19 Solo, $79 Team, $149+ Studio — details at /pricing.

The stacking is the story. The $19 Support Team tier is email-only; real omnichannel starts at Suite Team, drafting AI is another $50 per agent, and autonomous resolutions meter on top of everything. Third-party analyses put a fully-stacked Suite Professional seat around $215/agent/mo — $1,720 a month for eight agents, against $79 flat on inrelay Team.

05 · Moving

Migrating from Zendesk

Zendesk-side extraction is well-trodden; the catch is which plan you’re on.

Check your export rights

Admin export tools are not available on Team plans — full data export requires Growth, Professional or Enterprise. On a Team plan, the Incremental Exports API is your path out.

Export as JSON, not CSV

CSV exports omit ticket comments; JSON is the complete format. Full exports are rate-limited to roughly one per seven days, so start early.

Reconnect, or use a migration service

Connect your support address to inrelay and new mail flows immediately. For historical tickets, services like Help Desk Migration specialize in Zendesk-to-elsewhere moves.

Weighing the whole field first? The Zendesk alternatives roundup reviews ten real options, and the Help Scout and Hiver head-to-heads cover the simpler end of the shortlist.

Questions, answered.

Should a three-person team use Zendesk?
Only if that team has real process needs — SLAs, skills-based routing, voice — and someone willing to own the configuration. Zendesk’s community itself tends to steer small teams toward simpler tools; the complexity that makes it powerful at 50 agents is overhead at 3.
Does inrelay have SLAs and analytics like Zendesk?
SLA rules, not yet — they’re in development, and Zendesk clearly wins there today — noting that on Zendesk, SLA policies themselves start at Suite Growth, not the $55 Suite Team tier. Analytics ship on inrelay’s Team plan, though Explore is deeper. If SLA enforcement is a must-have this quarter, Zendesk (or Hiver, or Help Scout) is the honest pick.
What does Zendesk really cost with AI?
Plan on three lines: the seat ($55/agent/mo on Suite Team), Copilot for drafting (+$50/agent/mo), and autonomous AI resolutions metered on top at reported rates around $1.50–2.00 each — Zendesk doesn’t publish the overage pricing. For eight agents with Copilot that’s $840/mo before a single AI resolution. inrelay Team is $79/mo flat, agent included with a reply budget you set — no per-resolution fees.
How hard is it to leave Zendesk?
Mechanically well-understood: export JSON from the admin (CSV drops ticket comments) or use the API — required on Team plans, where export tools are absent. Migration services handle Zendesk as a source routinely. The bigger cost is usually unwinding workflows that only existed to serve the tool.
